What this is

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The preservative is the entire point: plain sterile water must be discarded after a single entry, whereas a preserved vial can be punctured repeatedly over a working period without supporting bacterial growth between withdrawals.

Mechanism

Benzyl alcohol disrupts bacterial cell membranes, which suppresses growth of organisms introduced during needle entry. It is bacteriostatic rather than bactericidal — it holds contamination in check rather than sterilising the vial, so aseptic technique still matters at every puncture.

History

Preserved water for injection has been a pharmacopoeial preparation for decades, and the multiple-dose vial format exists specifically so a single container can serve a course of work. In peptide research it became the default diluent because lyophilised material is almost always used across several sessions rather than all at once.
